Location and History of Plaistow & Winterton Hall

The Winterton Hall is located in the centre of Plaistow, a peaceful and rural village, situated in the north of West Sussex, bordering the Surrey county border and close to the South Downs’ National Park and the Wey and Arun Canal. Located directly opposite the village Green, Winterton Hall sits in between the village shop, Plaistow Stores, and the picturesque Pond, and is within close proximity to The Sun Inn, the Church and the village School. Plaistow is recorded as far back as 1272, and much of the village lies within a pretty conservation area with many Grade II listed properties. The Hall was erected in 1908, dedicated to Edward, 5th Earl of Winterton and presented to the Parish by Georgina Winterton, the widow of Lord Winterton in his memory.

Facilities

Winterton Hall offers a wide range of facilities including an excellent modern kitchen with an electric cooker, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, wall mounted water heater and large serving hatch from the kitchen into the Hall. The Hall also provides shower facilities, ideal for groups who may want to hire for overnight stays, and limited car parking. With a single and bright main room, the Hall has modern heating and lighting. All crockery, cutlery, glasses, tables & chairs are included within the hire of the Hall and are also available for private hire for external events. The adjacent building to the Hall incorporates a Youth Club annexe and an outdoor multi-sports area, which can be hired separately.

The Hall has a Public Entertainment Licence for music, dancing and performing arts as well as a gambling licence for events such as race nights and official raffles. It can accommodate 80 guests seated at tables & chairs or 149 attending a dance/disco or as a closely seated audience.

Regular Users

In addition to the Hall’s own Committee run events, Plaistow Pre-School use it daily during school term-time and also use their own play garden next door. The Hall is also used regularly by the Youth Club, Junior Youth Club, tea groups, the Parish Council and its Committees and single meetings and events. The Hall is available for private hirers and functions, and hosts numerous children’s parties and currently provides evening classes for Yoga and Boxing fitness and has a Martial Arts class for children starting in January 2020 on a Saturday morning. The Hall is also used by volunteers working nearby on the Wey and Arun Canal who take advantage of the excellent shower and kitchen facilities allowing them to stay overnight.

Winterton Hall Committee & Events

The Winterton Hall is run by a dedicated group of volunteers, committed to providing a diverse array of entertainment and events to raise funds to maintain and support this valuable asset to our Parish. Throughout the year, the Committee organise several events which have included live music, hog roast, quiz night, skittles evening, comedy entertainment, drama performances, guest speakers and race night, including fish & chip suppers and catering of meals. Because of its close proximity, it allows summer events to expand onto the village Green (subject to road closure application), providing additional outdoor space with marquees and gazebos.
